Accountability and Transparency

The focus of Governance work at the State and National level is to increase accountability of the institutions of governance towards people in general and marginalized section in particular. This is done by identifying gaps in different policies affecting decentralization of governance processes; initiating and strengthening the citizenry watch Processes and strengthening Civil Society action. To promote transparency and make governance accountable, necessary policy reforms were suggested for the devolution of powers to Panchayati Raj Institutions.

For people to understand the Governance Literacy Programme awareness programmes are organized on governance processes, layers of governance system and their roles and responsibilities, and accountability issues. They are capacitated to monitor and question the functioning of local self governance institutions.

Similarly a Citizen Leadership Programme is scaled up for creating and promoting local leaders and change agents. Apart from gearing up the community led development processes and creating voice for demanding accountability, this also addresses the issues of internal governance of the community institutions.

Intense Engagement with PRIs/ functionaries: With the arrival of new set of people’ representatives, the critical engagement with the PRIs is not only crucial but strategic. Partner NGOs are enabled to play a supportive role to the PRIs for actualizations of their governance functions.
