Help RLTC Incubate Champion Farmers on Natural Farming

The ill effects of pesticides on the environment as well as on living organisms is well known to us. An eco-friendly approach to grow crops using climate resilient cropping system is the need of the hour.

Natural Farming is a “chemical- free and livestock based farming”. Soundly grounded in agro-ecology, it is a diversified farming system that integrates crops, trees and livestock, allowing the optimum use of functional biodiversity. Natural Farming holds the promise of enhancing farmers’ income while delivering many other benefits, such as restoration of soil fertility and environmental health, and mitigating/reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Natural Farming builds on natural or ecological processes that exist in or around farms.

Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha are pre dominated by the tribal population who mostly depend on agriculture. The farmers are using chemical fertilizers and pesticides on farming instead of bio-manure for better yield without knowing its consequences. CYSD has been working with the tribal farmers of both the districts towards promotion of natural farming. A few progressive farmers have adopted this approach and gaining better result.

The Skill Incubation Centre of CYSD ‘Rural Livelihood Training Centre’ - RLTC at Kapundi of Keonjhar is a Green Skill centre, provides skills to the farmers on bio-diversity conservation, mixed cropping, inter cropping, green manuring, conservation of local seeds and plant species, and natural/organic farming. The centre intents to create 250 Champion Farmers on Natural Farming practices who will further diffuse the gathered skill and knowledge among their neighbourhood farmers, especially women and youth and help guide the farmers in practicing natural farming.

In each batch, 25 progressive farmers will be skilled on natural farming through a 2-day residential Training. CYSD aims at capacitating a team of 250 Champion Farmers in 10 batches. As a result, around 50,000 farmers of two adjacent tribal districts can be promoted to adopt natural farming for their sustainable livelihood.

Key Objectives of incubating Champion Farmers:

· Agriculture with Zero external inputs - artificial pesticides, herbicides, or fertiliZers

· Restore Soil fertility and Conservation of moisture and water

· Maintain diversity of crop production

· Use of Natural / local based inputs

· More organic debris in the soil

· Mixed cropping (crop-livestock)

The skill training will cover the topics like, Natural Farming principles, practices and its integrated approach; Components of natural farming; On-farm & Off-farm input based nutrient & Pest Management with traditional practices & natural production management planning in farming; Standard Certification Systems in natural farming; scopes & operations including marketing; Implementation framework of innovative schemes related to natural farming, and exposure visit to model natural farm & demonstration.
